Things New and Strange chronicles a research quest undertaken by G. Wayne Clough, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution born in the South. Soon after retiring from the Smithsonian, Clough decided to see what the Smithsonian collections could tell him about South Georgia, where he had spent most of his childhood in the 1940s and 1950s. The investigations that followed, which began as something of a quixotic scavenger hunt, expanded as Clough discovered that the collections had many more objects and documents from South Georgia than he had imagined. These objects illustrate important aspects of southern culture and history and also inspire reflections about how South Georgia has changed over time.
Clough's discoveries-animal, plant, fossil, and rock specimens, along with cultural artifacts and works of art-not only serve as a springboard for reflections about the region and its history, they also bring Clough's own memories of his boyhood in Douglas, Georgia, back to life. Clough interweaves memories of his own experiences, such as hair-raising escapes from poisonous snakes and selling boiled peanuts for a nickel a bag at the annual auction of the tobacco crop, with anecdotes from family lore, which launches an exploration of his forebears and their place in South Georgia history. In following his engaging and personal narrative, we learn how nonspecialists can use museum archives and how family, community, and natural history are intertwined.

As Rotarians, you are all leaders, some in your community, some in your profession, and some in life in general…
At RLI, our purpose is to give you the necessary tools and skills to be better Rotarians. As in every endeavor, the more you know about anything, the more interesting it becomes. Rotary is most assuredly one of those areas that the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. RLI can make that possible for you. Graduates of RLI are more likely to remain in, and be a bigger part of Rotary, than any other demographic.
RLI is a great place for newly inducted Rotarians to quickly learn about the “Object of Rotary”. Club Officers can build on their Rotary Knowledge to enhance their club experience. Club Presidents can expand on the skills gained at their President Elect Training Seminar. Long time Rotarians can re-kindle the old Rotary flame, and at the same time share their experiences with the other participants.
In this interactive session, Adam will define Trust and describe how to get there quickly in sales and in life. You will leave with two templates and a few lessons to bring back to your office and home.
Mr. Collins and his wife had a baby in the wee hours of the morning before our meeting, so Richard Gerakitis subbed with Chris Wells' "Dogoodery" presentation from the Rotary International Conference in Hamburg.

July 1, 2019 ¬– In front of a crowd of supporters, Joyette Holmes took the oath of office this morning as Cobb District Attorney. Gov. Brian Kemp administered the oath at the Cobb Superior Courthouse.
“This moment of being sworn in as the next District Attorney for the Cobb Judicial Circuit will not be taken for granted,” Holmes said. “I will work tirelessly to honor Governor Kemp’s confidence in me to do the job, to make proud the advocates in my life who always remind me, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and to gain the support and trust of all whom I come to meet throughout the journey.”
Former DA Vic Reynolds was appointed to lead the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in February, creating the vacancy. John Melvin served as acting DA in the interim. Holmes served as an assistant district attorney under DA Reynolds until 2015, when she was tapped to be Cobb’s Chief Magistrate.
Today, Holmes said, “I am looking forward to beginning this new chapter and working with the great women and men of the District Attorney’s Office who have vowed to continue the task of keeping our communities safe. I am also excited to collaborate with organizations in the community who are committed to being proactive in the fight against crime and those willing to be a resource when appropriate.”
