As an example, the Meriwether County Rotary Club has supported numerous educational efforts such as Get Meriwether Reading, Community Literacy Events, Trunk or Treat for Books
Each September, Rotary shines a spotlight on one of its
seven areas of focus: Basic Education and Literacy. Reading and writing
are more than just skills—they are tools for empowerment. They open the doors
to knowledge, opportunity, and connection, serving as the foundation for
success in life.
When communities strengthen education and literacy, the
impact is profound. Improvements reduce poverty, encourage economic
development, and promote peace. They also improve health outcomes, from
lowering maternal mortality to increasing childhood survivability. Beyond that,
literacy fosters individual achievement, enabling people to thrive in their
professions and communities.
Rotary Clubs around the world are already making a
difference. Projects may include addressing adult literacy, helping youth
return to school, enhancing student performance, or supplementing limited
school resources. Every effort, big or small, helps build brighter futures.
As we celebrate Basic Education and Literacy Month,
consider how your club is — or could be — showcasing Unite for Good
by supporting education in your community or across the globe. We'd love to hear your stories in next month's newsletter.
